Ho CHi Minh
Ho Chi Minh was born on May 19th, 1890 in French Indochina. He served as a soldier in World War 2, fighting against the Japanese in which he was allied with U.S. Ho Chi Minh played several important roles in the country of Vietnam. He started out as being a revolutionary leader; he then went on to become the nations Prime Minister from 1945 to 1955. He also led Vietnam’s independence movement from 1941 and established the communist- ruled Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945. One of what some people would consider his greatest accomplishment would be when he became the President of Vietnam which he served as from 1945 to 1969, making him the Prime Minister and President during the same time period.
Ho Chi Minh was a very important figure during the Vietnam War because he was a Vietnamese Communist and revolutionary leader who, throughout much of the twentieth century, sought to free his nation from colonial influence. He led Northern Vietnamese armed forces against Japanese, French, and American forces, as well as against rival factions of Vietnamese.
Ho Chi Minh and his forces were victorious against the French in the First Indochina War. In the Second Indochina War, also known as the Vietnam War (in the United States), in which he led the North Vietnamese in an effort to expel U.S. forces, crush the South Vietnamese anti-communist government, and to reunite the country. When he was asked in December of 1966 if he would fight to final victory, he stated, "If by 'final victory' you mean the departure of the Americans, then we will fight to final victory. Everything depends on the Americans. If they want to make war for 20 years then we shall make war for 20 years. If they want to make peace, we shall make peace and invite them to tea afterwards." He died in 1969, six years before the North declared victory in the Vietnam War and completed the reunification of the country under Communist rule.
